Christopher Dresser: Metal

Christopher Dresser (1834–1904) was one of the most important designers of the late 19th century, and indeed stands tall in the broader context of design greats.

His work - in ceramic, metal, and glass - had a huge influence on decorative arts of the period. Given the proto-modernism of much of his work – especially in metal - his influence has been an enduring one. Working with Britain’s most important manufacturers he created purist objects that through new technologies like electroplating, made good design democratic.

CHRISTOPHER DRESSER: METAL, showcases some of his best known work, all made in the 1880’s. They perfectly balance form and function and the result, I think, is art. Over the next 10 days I will share rare examples of his work, identical versions of which are in museums around the world. My friends know I’m obsessed with Dresser, a botanist, an educator, a Japanophile, a polymath, and a genius.
